Quinton went back to his office and, after everyone was gone for the day, thought long and hard about whether to stay on the Collins case. He still had about twenty thousand of the car insurance money he’d settled for on the Camry, but that would be gone in a quick minute if he was to take on all the expenses involved with defending the tort case. He kicked himself for not having billed his hours more frequently. Of course, he’d send a bill to Judge Garzon for his time up to the date of the court hearing when his ticket was jerked, but he had no idea if he’d get paid for the outstanding balance. Probably not.

He thought he had a good case, and with The Hammer pushing for big bucks, it could go either way. The Hammer could drive them toward a good settlement offer, or he could drag them into court and force him to spend hundreds of thousands to defend Lily’s claim. He’d invested so much time on the case already, he was reluctant to cut and run if a paycheck was right around the corner.

And what about Lily? If The Hammer took over her case, which is probably what would happen, she might be forced into a settlement for pennies on the dollar along with all the other members of the class. If, by chance, Judge Garzon found another lawyer, in lieu of The Hammer, would he stand up for Lily in the face of the pressure to settle?

Can I live with myself if I abandon her?

He heard a gentle tapping at the outer door and went out to see who might be trying to get his attention. It was Channing. Quinton opened the door and smiled. “You’re a sight for sore eyes.”

“You, too.” She kissed him on the cheek.

“Come in. May I offer you a glass of wine or coffee?”

“Wine would be great.”

“Go on into the conference room. I’ll be right there.” He returned with two glasses of pinot noir in large glass wine balloons, purchased by Anna when she’d stocked the break room.

Channing stood at the window gazing down on the lovely lights all around The Galleria and Post Oak Boulevard. “Great view.”

“I had planned to show it to you at some point. Have a seat. What brings you by?”

“I heard about what happened in court today with Judge Garzon pulling your meal ticket.”

Quinton winced. “Word gets around fast.”

“Thought you might need some moral support.”

“As a matter-of-fact, I was just mulling it over. Pros and cons, you know.”

“And?”

“I haven’t decided. Do you have an opinion?”

“Not really.” She studied his face. “I do wonder if it’s worth the risk and the headache.”

“What about Lily?”

“I’ll be there for her. You could visit at some point in the future if you felt so inclined.”

“So you think I should get out?”

“Only if you want to. I’d just hate to see you stay in because of guilt. Best business decision, right?”

Quinton sipped his wine and thought for a moment.
